The #MeToo movement has made workplace sexual harassment a nationwide issue. After a former staffer spoke out about sexual harassment in the Kansas Legislature, the Senate president, Susan Wagle, defended her and publicly pushed for reform. Their efforts represent two moments in a broader push to improve the working climate for women in the Statehouse. But will it be enough to turn the tide?
#MeToo is just one of the major societal shifts having an effect in Kansas. Social media organizing has also changed the game for political organizing, as the #NoTysonInTongie movement showed. Other stories in this issue look at symbolic leadership, the use of power and exercising leadership from below.
