Teresa Schwab | Coach
Meet Teresa Schwab and you’re getting acquainted with a native Kansan with a lifelong pattern of taking big risks.
In 1988, Teresa was the first in her family to go to college. In 1995, she and her husband sold everything and moved to the Solomon Islands as Peace Corps volunteers. In 2003, she became the first executive director of a new non-profit organization. And in 2010, with three young children at home, she left a secure job to start her own business.
These experiences reflect Teresa’s foundational beliefs about how transformation happens. The way she sees things, growth and change become possible when we step into disruption, struggle or discomfort. Lasting change starts when someone challenges the status quo. As a coach, Teresa knows transforming oneself, or leading transformation in an organization or community, requires a willingness to take risks, and a sense of purpose strong enough to know those risks are worthwhile.
Teresa is a coach in Lead for Change and a member of the teaching team for KLC’s Leadership Coach Intensive. People who’ve worked with Teresa say her strengths lie in asking tough questions, helping create a deeper sense of self-awareness and encouraging multiple ways of looking at an issue. At the same time, Teresa’s watchword is compassion. She engages with her clients and student coaches compassionately. She encourages everyone she works with to treat themselves and others compassionately, too.
A recent client said, “Teresa listens better than any other person I know!” Teresa has coached individuals, teams and groups in all sectors, including not-for-profit, civic, religious, public and private. Her approach is highly customized to her clients’ needs. With a Masters in Social Work, she utilizes a systems-based approach that relies heavily on strengths, and as a Professional Certified Coach (PCC) through the International Coach Federation, she values each person as creative, resourceful and whole.
When not working, Teresa lives in Lawrence with her husband, three sons, two cats and one dog. There is a never a dull moment. She wouldn’t have it any other way!
