David Sotelo’s journey began with a question of safety and survival, which led him to Hutchinson, Kansas, in 2010, fleeing threats from drug cartels in Mexico. This life-changing move ignited his passion for building communities where everyone feels a sense of belonging.

David’s curiosity and dedication to community development have been the driving forces behind his career. After graduating from Hutchinson High School, he pursued seminary studies in Missouri and Texas, seeking to understand the deeper connections between faith and community. His professional path took shape in non-profit project management and strategic communications, where he guided organizations in crafting impactful messages at BowerComm.

In 2020, David’s commitment to equity, diversity, and inclusion was recognized when he became City of Hutchinson‘s human relations officer. This role allowed him to lead initiatives that fostered a sense of belonging for all residents. Now, as the head of the City’s strategic growth department, David oversees housing, economic development, public communications, and human relations, all while staying true to his mission of creating inclusive communities.

David discovered the Kansas Leadership Center early in his career, and its leadership framework has been integral to his success. He credits KLC’s teachings with transforming his approach to leadership, enabling him to think and act from a broader, systemic perspective. In addition to his role in city leadership, David is working towards his ACC coaching certification, using these emerging skills to facilitate leadership training in Reno County and help organizations and individuals grow through KLC’s principles.

David’s commitment to community extends beyond his professional life. He serves on the boards of the United Way of Reno County, Hutchinson Chamber of Commerce, Kansas Appleseed, and Horizons Mental Health Center. His passion for community-building is matched by his love for cooking, reading, and traveling the world with his wife, Maddy.
