The Outdoor Education Laboratory (OEL) in Stilwell, KS hopes to provide local organizations additional space to gather safely both outside as well as inside. Their action plan includes repurposing existing buildings with furniture and equipment to allow multiple people to work while staying socially distant. They also hope to equip several outdoor areas with heating lamps and fire pits around the camp.

Here’s what else is new in grassroots efforts to slow the spread of the COVID-19 pandemic in Kansas.
- Start at Zero: Start a “Gift Box Project” to provide parents and families in Wyandotte with porch-delivered boxes containing items that will support mental health, safety, and help them stay safe at home.
- WyCo Young Leaders: Design a virtual college fair to expose graduating Wyandotte County high school seniors to universities and colleges as well as offer assistance with resume writing, financial aid, scholarship research, and interviewing skills.
- Sigma Gamma Rho Mentor Group: Implement an “Operation Thank You” card shower to show appreciation to all the front-line workers in Wichita.
- Holy Spirit Catholic School: Set up outdoor learning spaces at the Overland Park school to enable additional areas for safe and socially distanced learning.
- Salena’s Organization: Create a virtual TGIF & Funky Friday event for the black community across Kansas to share resources and eliminate barriers to COVID services.

Kansas Beats the Virus is a partnership between the Kansas Leadership Center and the State of Kansas to activate KLC’s statewide network to generate local solutions that slow the spread of the COVID-19 pandemic. The goal of the effort is to spark hundreds of small group meetings before the end of 2020.
