When you step out of your comfort zone just a little bit, you open a multitude of new opportunities for leadership.

Show this two-and-a-half-minute video as part of a larger lesson or discussion about managing self.

Invite members of your group to think about a current situation in which they want to exercise more leadership. Then have them identify three of the behaviors below that are at the edge of their comfort zone. Challenge them to try one within the week or practice it right away in your leadership class.

  • Raise a provocative interpretation.
  • Stop talking if you are a usual voice in the conversation.
  • Ask questions whenever you are tempted to defend your position.
  • Stay fully present when the moment gets tense.
  • Validate others’ emotions.
  • Speak to your values rather than explain your logic.
  • Speak up if you are naturally a quiet person.
  • Talk with someone who thinks differently. Actively listen to his or her point of view.
  • Don’t give any suggestions for action. Seek only to understand the situation.
  • Speak to your part of the mess. Share what you are contributing to the problem.

Consider replaying the first 15 seconds of the video. Ask folks to discuss the wisdom in the opening statement by Shaun Rojas: “It’s worth it to put up with the uncertainty and the conflict when you are clear on your purpose and you are doing something for the greater good of your organization, your community, your business.”

What does purpose have to do with getting out of your comfort zone?

The video runs 2:31 minutes and features Your Leadership Edge co-author Amanda Cebula with Jan Davis and Shaun Rojas. It pairs well with the Comfort Zone activity sheet in our Manage Self packet and Part 2 (pages 58-101) in Your Leadership Edge: Manage Self.
