Details

What happens when we stop dancing and start noticing? What’s the view from the balcony?

In this straightforward and thought-provoking two-and-a-half-minute video, the KLC team introduces the simple yet incredibly useful practice of “getting on the balcony.” This video may be all you need to get started integrating “balcony conversations” in your organization or classroom. Key ideas include:

  • Getting on the balcony helps people change their course of action and try something different.
  • The balcony perspective makes us more purposeful in our interactions.
  • The balcony is where we find space to think about what’s adaptive.
  • You can move between the balcony and the dance floor without anyone knowing you are doing it.

Show the video or have people watch it before class or your next team meeting. Then encourage conversation. Use facilitation questions such as:

  • What have you observed about how we work and learn together?
  • Individually, what have you noticed about your behavior or feelings during these meetings?
  • What roles or patterns are emerging?
  • What meaning or interpretations can we make?
  • What’s working? What needs to change?

Push for tough, potentially more adaptive (and productive) interpretations with questions such as:

  • What’s a tougher interpretation?
  • What is an elephant in the room?
  • What did you talk about in the parking lot (or hallway) that we haven’t yet discussed here?

The Moving Between the Balcony and the Dance Floor video is a great way to prepare students to debrief a high-heat session. You can use it as part of a larger lesson about Diagnose Situation or to encourage a team to become more conscious about its process for working together. Related reading is in Your Leadership Edge: Part 1: Diagnose Situation.

The video runs 2:34 minutes and features KLC CEO Ed O’Malley with Jan Davis and Julia Fabris McBride.
