The Price of Inequality: How Should Communities Deal
with the Disparities Revealed by COVID-19?

A KLC Journal Magazine Virtual Launch Event and Discussion

Join us July 28 for the virtual release of the KLC Journal magazine’s Summer edition with a focus on the kind of leadership needed to address the racial and ethnic health disparities brought to light during the COVID-19 pandemic.

The latest Journal will feature the story of Brandon McCray, a beloved preacher and gospel musician from Wyandotte County, who died in a hospital this spring as his family looked on via Zoom. He is one of more than 60 Black Kansans to lose their lives to COVID-19 in the pandemic, which has disproportionately hurt people of color and claimed Black lives in Kansas at a rate more than four times that of white Kansans. The story of his life and death helps illustrate a small part of what’s been lost and how the problem of health inequities runs so much deeper than a virus.

Special guests for the event include Jarius Jones, sibling of Dr. Brandon McCray, Rev. Tony Carter, Jr. of Salem Missionary Baptist Church in Kansas City, Kansas and Qiana Thomason, President/CEO of Health Forward Foundation in Kansas City, Missouri.

Join them and Journal magazine editor Chris Green as they discuss Brandon’s story, the impact of COVID-19 and what discussions communities should be having if they want to become healthier and more equitable.

Special thanks to media sponsor KMUW, Wichita Public Radio at 89.1 FM.
