No one wants their school to be the next Uvalde. But school board members face competing values about how to reduce gun violence in schools. During our final Space to Talk discussion of 2022, we will use a recent article from our nationally recognized civic issues magazine to explore what it looks like to navigate this issue from a position of authority. There will be time for discussion with peers on how the role of authority can create a trustworthy process and help others navigate change and loss when doing this adaptive work.
This quarter’s Space to Talk will be hosted by Racquel Thiesen, KLC director of community partnerships and Keith Tatum, KLC Journal columnist and Topeka school board member.
Space to Talk is a series of quarterly virtual discussions created for public officials, by former public officials. If you are a current or aspiring elected or appointed official, this conversation is for you. Learn more about KLC’s efforts to support civic officials through the Leadership in Public Service initiative.
