Discussion Prep

Step 1
Determine your When Everyone Leads project purpose. Choose from among the following or create your own:

  • Give people the opportunity to read and discuss a great new book about leadership.
  • Launch multiple When Everyone Leads discussion groups in my community or organization.
  • Help my organization or community make more progress on our toughest challenges.
  • Spread the KLC leadership framework and the ideas in When Everyone Leads throughout my company.
  • Help people in my company or community see and seize their moments to lead.
  • Encourage people to move to action and exercise more leadership after they’ve read the book.
  • Understand more about the KLC leadership framework and the curiously countercultural idea that “it’s when everyone leads that our toughest, most important challenges get seen and solved.”
  • Something else______________________________________________________.

Write out your When Everyone Leads project purpose:

Step 2
Determine who you want to join the discussion. We recommend 6-12 people per When Everyone Leads discussion group. For now, just list a few names of friends or coworkers. If you have a vision to host multiple groups in your company or organizations, list roles and departments to engage. If your project is community-wide, use this space to identify groups you’d like to collaborate with.
Step 3
Decide whether you want to host one 90-minute book discussion or a series of five discussion. When Everyone Leads has five parts. You can choose whether you want to discuss the whole book in one sitting or host a series of conversations. You’ll find two versions of the discussion guide starting on this site (1 for single 90 minute session, and 5 individual hour long sessions).
Step 4

Schedule your discussion(s) and invite your people. See the invitation template on this webpage. Adapt it to fit your needs. Make sure everyone knows details like:

  • Purpose of the discussion(s).
  • How to buy When Everyone Leads or borrow it from the library.
  • Start and end times.
  • Group member contact information (if appropriate).
  • Will you meet online or in person?
  •  Will there be social time before or after?
  • Will there be snacks?
  • Other – as you see fit
Step 5

Get familiar with the When Everyone Leads discussion guide. Get ready to have fun and learn about what happens when everyone (yes, everyone!) leads. Review the facilitator tips on this site. Prepare to make a few key decisions:

  • Choose your discussion questions in advance. Start with broad questions and follow the interest of the group.
  • For a 60- to 90-minute discussion of the whole book, prepare just one or two questions per section in the facilitation guide.
  • For a five-part discussion series, prepare 7-10 questions per discussion.
  • Times indicated in the facilitation are recommendations only. Adjust them to fit your group and your discussion purpose.
  • Each section of the facilitation guides starts with an introductory paragraph. Before you facilitate, choose how you’ll introduce each section. You can:
    1. Read the introductory paragraph.
    2. Introduce the section in your own words.
    3. Play one of the short videos below. (We recommend no more than one video per discussion.)
    4. Jump right into your discussion questions.

Facilitator Tips

Facilitator Tips
  1. Trust yourself. You can do this.
  2. If you are nervous, work with a partner.
  3. Trust the people in your group to have lots to say about leadership and their challenges.
  4. Prepare 7-10 questions in advance of your discussion. But if a particular topic has traction don’t rush on to the next. If you planned to focus on one chapter but your group is more interested in another, adjust your plan.
  5. Make sure everyone gets a chance to speak.
  6. Don’t push people to talk more than they want to. Some people really enjoy being part of a welcoming space where they can listen and reflect quietly about what they’ve read.
  7. Don’t be afraid to ask deep or provocative follow-up questions. You’ll be surprised by how vulnerable people are willing to be in a small group.
  8. Spend 30 minutes preparing and the discussion will practically facilitate itself.
  9. Have fun with this. When you do, great discussion and learning about leadership will follow.
