KANSAS CIVIC LEADERSHIP – CONTEXT AND COMPETENCIES
Designed to significantly enhance an individual’s understanding of civic life in Kansas and one’s ability to be effective in civic leadership, this five day residential program is a first of its kind in Kansas. Context and Competencies is part of a robust strategy of the Kansas Leadership Center to cultivate more civic leadership across Kansas. The program will use the dynamic “case in point” methodology, peer consulting and other interactive teaching techniques to foster civic leadership. Tools and concepts for working with civic challenges in our communities will be introduced. Participants will explore what makes civic leadership difficult and will work on key competencies that will make their civic leadership efforts more effective. Finally, participants will be guided, in small group settings, to design low-risk experiments to bring program concepts and ideas into their own practice of civic leadership. Context and Competencies was offered in October, 2008 and will be repeated in October, 2009. KLC will begin taking applications in June, 2009.
Comments from "Context and Competencies" program participants:
"Giving a full week to a conference took a lot of commitment, but it was truly a week well spent."
"A first-class program offering multiple benefits and lots of inspiration."
THE ART AND PRACTICE OF CIVIC LEADERSHIP DEVELOPMENT
July 2008 - July 2009
This year-long, multi-event initiative is a customized learning opportunity for a small group of leadership development educators. Drawing on the expertise of nationally renowned faculty, the initiative is designed to enhance significantly (and measurably) the teaching skills of leadership development educators working within Kansas. By leveraging the leadership development and teaching skills of existing practitioners, our hope is to elevate the discussion of civic leadership across the state and to increase our local capacity to extend state-of-the-art learning about civic leadership more broadly to every corner of Kansas. The program begins in July 2008 and will conclude in July 2009.

INNOVATIVE IDEAS IN CIVIC LEADERSHIP DEVELOPMENT
March 2008
This one-and-a-half-day workshop, held for the first time in March 2008, brought together individuals already involved in the field of leadership development.
The workshop had several overlapping goals:
- Getting to know us, the KLC. As a new organization, we wanted to introduce the KLC, our guiding principles, and our curriculum framework to the 150 attendees, each actively engaged in different aspects of leadership development.
- Getting to know each other. Despite their shared interest and involvement in the discipline of leadership development, many of these remarkably diverse attendees had never been convened in the same place at the same time.
- Getting a jump-start on new ideas. By convening this group, we hoped to stimulate new ideas related to the practice of leadership development in Kansas.
The synergy at this initial workshop seemed to spark both connections and learning, just as we had hoped:
“I appreciate the efforts to honor the leadership development efforts in the state of Kansas that have preceded the KLC and the spirit of working as colleagues…thanks!”
– Cheryl Rude, Southwestern College
“The action/reflection ebb and flow was unique (in my experience) and refreshing and truly educational.”
– Terry Woodbury, Kansas Communities, LLC
Forthcoming Programs
The design of additional programs, activities and events is underway and our next crop will be piloted throughout 2008 and 2009.
The pipeline for future initiatives already includes:
- Extensive work with the Kansas Community Leadership Initiative (an innovative program for local community leadership programs created and initially delivered by the Kansas Health Foundation).
- Programs focused on certain roles or functions in civic life.
- Programs designed to hone civic leadership skills for Kansans from all walks of life.
